Where Data Science Meets the Open Ocean.
the mission
Engineering Truth into the Maritime Ecosystem
Ditch Technology exists to close the architectural gap between theoretical charts and navigable truth. We believe that in a dynamic environment like the open ocean, relying on static data is no longer a navigation strategy, it is a significant operational liability. Our mission is to decode the chaos of the water using the rigor of enterprise engineering, transforming the collective experience of the world's captains into the digital infrastructure of the future.
The Origin: From Operational Failure to Core Thesis
The architecture for Ditch was not sketched in a boardroom; it was born from a failure of current industry standards.
While navigating a notoriously shifting section of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (ICW), co-founders Peter Williams and Owen Davies encountered a critical data gap: their chart plotter promised deep water, but their depth sounder indicated imminent grounding. The static survey data had reached its limit.
In that moment, they realized the industry didn't need another map. It needed a system that could learn. They asked the fundamental question that drives our IP today: Why are we relying on outdated surveys when we could be learning from the thousands of boats that successfully navigated this channel yesterday?
The Leadership: Engineering Risk Out of the System
Ditch Technology is not a typical marine startup; we are Systems Architects first. Founders Peter and Owen bring over 50 years of combined experience building state of the art IT systems designed to mitigate risk in global financial markets.
They spent decades mastering the science of signal vs. noise, identifying truth in massive, complex datasets where a single error carries catastrophic cost.
They applied this exact methodology to the marine industry. By treating vessel behavior as a data problem, they built an engine that separates the transient tourist (noise) from the Local Expert (signal).
Today, Ditch Technology is no longer just an app. It is the industry's only patent protected infrastructure for Behavioral Navigation™, built by a team that understands that on the water, just like in financial markets, the quality of your data defines the safety of your decision.
The
Founders
Peter Williams
Co-Founder & CEO
The Enterprise Architect.
Peter has spent his career building systems that cannot fail. As the former CTO of MIO Partners (McKinsey Investment Office) and a senior technology leader at UBS and Morgan Stanley, he specializes in high frequency, low latency infrastructure where data integrity is paramount. He translates the complex physics of the Ditch engine into a scalable, defensible business asset, ensuring the platform meets the rigorous standards of enterprise acquisition.
Owen Davies
Co-Founder & CTO
The Data & Engineering Lead.
With a background in managing large-scale, risk critical datasets, Owen is the architect behind the Ditch engine. A physicist by training, he brings a scientific rigor to large scale data engineering. With decades of experience in financial institutions, he specializes in finding the signal in the noise. As CTO, he leads the technical execution, applying this unique blend of physics and financial modeling to build the industry’s first production hardened behavioral navigation system.
